(We were not helping him GET a hernia; he did that on his own somehow...)

Next thing you know, he's trying to get us to put all three legs on the baby grand piano- then pick the thing STRAIGHT UP- two of us- then tip it onto the legs.

Has ANYone even heard of an OTR driver- even with a third- or fourth- tier van lines or moving company- directing his vastly-experienced, non-greedy, gentlemanly, strong-as-hell help to do something so absurd?

Gee, driver, ever wonder why you have that hernia? Ever think of working smarter- not harder?

To make things worse, his agent is trying to tell us that:

  1. "He's been with us a long time." and

  2. "We've never had 'any' complaints about him."

Excuse me? How is that even possible? This is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. He makes a big soap opera out of the piano and the rest of the small shipment, then gives us the address for a pack-and-load, then lackadaisacally cancels us (without telling us).

Duh? Ever hear about these subhuman drivers' helpers- not the two of us who tried helping "Blinky-" who show up anyway at the origin address, demand money and/or raise hell because the driver didn't have the ethics and professionalism to cancel his help?

This is Atlas?

  1. Where are we headed and

  2. Anyone else thinking of moving a baby grand piano this way? and

  3. The agent's management are just as inept, so shouldn't we be able to give Atlas World Group some input? Or is this how we do things from now on?

Business Picking Up

I am starting to see a pickup in moves from my accounts.
Thieves are swiping tractor-trailers filled with goods, triggering a spike in cargo theft on the nation's highways.

Over five days last month, an 18-wheeler carrying 710 cartons of consumer electronics was stolen from a Pennsylvania rest stop, a 53-foot-long rig packed with 43,000 pounds of paper was ripped off in Ottawa, Ill., and a 40-foot-long truck filled with reclining armchairs went missing in Atlanta.

Truckloads containing $487 million of goods were stolen in the U.S. in 2009, a 67% increase over the $290 million worth of products swiped a year earlier. Thieves stole 859 truckloads in 2009, up from 767 loads in 2008 and 672 in 2007, according to FreightWatch International, an Austin, Texas-based supply-chain security firm that maintains a database of thefts that several government agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, look to for trends.

"In the past two months, we've just seen such an increase that it's to the point where criminals are just wreaking havoc," said Sandor Lengyel, a detective sergeant and squad leader in New Jersey State Police's cargo-theft unit. "They'll pretty much steal anything." Cargo thieves ripped off $28 million in goods in New Jersey in 2009, an 87% spike from the $15 million stolen in 2008, he said.

Law-enforcement authorities in Illinois, California and Pennsylvania are among several agencies and industry groups also reporting a spike.

Chubb Corp., a major insurer based in Warren, N.J., said that its own insurance claims and data from other sources show 725 cargo thefts in 2009, up 6.6% from 680 in 2008, and up 23% from 592 cargo thefts recorded for 2007. Chubb estimates the 2009 thefts amounted to $435 million of products.

The latest wave of thefts is different from a run of tractor-trailer hijackings that occurred in the 1960s, when organized-crime rings forced drivers out at gunpoint and took their trucks. According to industry officials and police, the current thefts are generally nonviolent and typically happen at rest stops when the driver is away from the truck and eating or showering.

While organized-crime rings may be involved, "we are seeing a lot more amateurs get into this," said Sgt. Sid Belk, of the California Highway Patrol. Cargo bandits made off with $29 million of goods in 2009 in Southern California, up 67% from $17.4 million in 2008, according to the highway patrol.

Thieves often know what cargo a truck is hauling because they will follow trucks from a plant, according to police.

Thieves drive the whole tractor-trailer away or hitch up to an unattended trailer, as truckers sometimes leave a trailer in a drop lot and drive off in just the tractor for an errand.

Cargo theft represents a big concern and cost for trucking and other freight haulers, says J.J. Coughlin, chairman of the SouthWest Transportation Security Council, a nonprofit industry group that represents more than 200 freight-shipping companies. The council estimates that the average loss in each theft is $350,000—and that is just the load inside the truck. "Sometimes you lose that too," he said of the tractor-trailer. Typically, though, the tractor-trailer is found miles away.

Mr. Coughlin said that in an effort to combat the problem, freight shippers have been meeting more with police departments. The shippers have also been pushing owners of truck stops and drop lots to provide better security.

Also, in the past two years, the freight shippers have banded together to try to come up with solutions, such as sharing information about what kinds of loads are most stolen so that when those goods are shipped, everyone in the supply chain can be alerted to pay extra attention.

California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Illinois and New Jersey are the top states for number of cargo thefts, according to FreightWatch. The crooks are targeting such things as electronics, food and beverages, clothing, pharmaceuticals and cigarettes.

The thefts can also threaten consumer safety. In February 2009, an unattended refrigerated truck with $11 million of insulin made by Danish drug concern Novo Nordisk A/S was ripped off in Conover, N.C., while the driver was in a truck stop, according to Sgt. Shane Moore, of the Conover police department.

After the theft, the Food and Drug Administration and Novo Nordisk put out a news release, alerted the health-care industry, and advised pharmacies to inspect inventories, said Sean Clements, a company spokesman. Still, some of the stolen vials wound up in the hands of diabetics, several of whom showed up at medical centers in Kentucky and Texas over the summer sickened because the insulin was inactive, said Karen Riley, an FDA spokeswoman.

The FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations is looking into how the drugs were given to patients. Mr. Clements said the stolen insulin did not get to patients through Novo Nordisk's normal distribution. He said the "safety of our patients is of paramount concern," and that the company is working with investigators, and has taken steps to improve security.

Electronics were the target of a thief who struck near midnight on Jan. 13 at a minimart in Hazleton, Pa., two hours north of Philadelphia. A trucker hauling $500,000 of electronics to an Amazon.com Inc. distribution center left his trailer parked there while he made another delivery elsewhere, said Trooper Charles Everdale III, of the Pennsylvania's State Police auto-theft task force. When the trucker returned the trailer was gone, the trooper said.

He said the partially empty trailer turned up in recent days in Palm Beach, Fla. Amazon declined to comment.
<CITE =paperLocation>Printed in The Wall Street Journal, page A3

How to resolve issues with internet mover

Wow. ReloRow is an incredible source of knowledgable info from
industry insiders.

Unfortunately, I have been scammed by an internet mover on a
move from Seattle to Atlanta. Quote was for $3,700 and the bill is
for over $10,000. They claim I shipped 20K pounds. Grabel did my
move from ATL to Seattle and provided documentation. The total
weight was far less than 20K pounds. The mover has my goods and
is insisting that I send them $9,000 before they allow me to pick up
my household goods (not even offering to deliver any more) from a
local storage facility. I will spare the details of the scam and horrible
customer service.

Question: What can I do to get them to settle this issue and let me
have my stuff? I suggested I hire a "local" mover to load the goods
and provide an ACCURATE weight THEN pay the mover 80% of the
price per pound since they will not be doing the delivery and set up.

Unscrupulous movers give the industry of hard working people such
a bad name. This mover knows all the rules and exactly what he
can get away with. Not having our household goods for going on (3)
weeks is tremendous hardship and expense for my family. Does
anyone have any advice? Who else can I complain to? How does
arbitration work?

Thanks,

Gil

Freight train vs UVL truck

http://mediafetcher.com/article_full.php?id=113466

Recession reins in America's wanderlust
Study: More are staying put in their current homes

By Carol Morello
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 10:18 AM

The wanderlust that helped define the American character has been reined in by the recession and the collapse in housing prices, according to a new study showing fewer Americans changing residences than at any time since World War II.

About 12 percent of Americans moved in each of the last two years, down from 13 to 14 percent a year during the first part of this decade. Historical trends show a more precipitous drop. In any given year throughout the 1990s, 16 to 17 percent of Americans changed homes. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was one in five.

William Frey, a Brookings Institution demographer who wrote the study, said the economic slowdown has accelerated a long-term trend of people growing more rooted as homeownership has risen and society has gotten older with the aging of the Baby Boomers. Add the bursting of the housing bubble, the credit crisis and the resulting recession, and many people are cemented in place.

"This triple whammy of forces made it riskier for would-be homebuyers to find financing, would-be sellers to receive good value for their home, and potential long-distance movers to find employment in areas where jobs were previously plentiful," said Frey, who analyzed statistics from the Census Bureau and the IRS for the study released Wednesday.

Frey paints a picture of an America settling into stasis. Metropolises like New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles _ that had been losing tens of thousands of residents in search of more affordable housing _ held on to more people. The outflow also subsided in the Washington area, where population growth has been fueled by the arrival of tens of thousands of immigrants.

The phenomenon affected people across all demographics.

The young and the footlose in their 20s are usually responsible for an outsized share of those who move, and they showed the steepest decline as jobs grew scarce, prompting many to return to their parents' homes.

Even the unemployed people are less mobile.

"Five years ago, they might have decided to go to Las Vegas or Orlando, whether they had a job or not, because they thought they could find something," said Frey. "Now they're stuck."

Frey said he expects people to start relocating again once the economy improves, though not to the levels of half a century ago.

"We're a country of pioneers," he said. "People moved here in the early days of the formation of the country. They were always moving, westward or suburb-ward or to the Sunbelt. The idea that we can improve our lot in life by migration, not by standing where we are and hoping it will get better, is in our genes."

I've been in sales since 1986 whern I started with Salka & Sons. agent for NAVL, Meriden, CT.

I've done mostly COD household, but have experience with office moving, and have managed to secure a few accounts through the years.

This is the perfect career for me as it gives me the opportunity to help people who need it, at a time when they need not to be tricked, scammed, deceived or otherwise taken advantage of.

I am a straight-shooter who puts an emphasis on guiding the consumer through all of the challeges associated with preparing for a smooth and efficient transfer to their new homes.

This is a monumental responsibility for people in my position, and it has always amazed me that people will actually pick a mover by price alone, and then wonder why they had such a bad experience.

The customer and the mover need to be partners in the success of the project, and it is my responsibility to educate my customers on all the options available to them, and to be an on-going resource on the matters of moving.

I believe that there is a mover for everyone, and the reality is that not all prospects will be my customers. Those that are will have my commitment to their project, and will likely call again for their next move.

I hope to able to share my experiences here on this site.

Thanks Chris.

So i try not to get to much help where the guys wont make anything,ie (3 men on 10grand) or to little help where the guys get worked to death and no amount seems like enough ie(2men on 25grand)

But why do i have have to drive a 70+ foot free taxi and pick guys up and take them back to the shop. While paying them to get me lost, sleep on my bed. talk on thier phone? In construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting etc.. the guys are given an address and start time to the job site. It is thier own responsibility to the job location AND HOME. The clock starts when they arrive and stops at the end of the day. No one picks them up and stops at the coffee shop and drives them home, especially while paying them.

Why is it if the shipper, does not buy them lunch. I have to, or else face a work slowdown and bitching session?

and here is my biggie. Why does a helper who works for $9:00 an hour for the agent. Work 10 hours make $90 for the day before taxes and $75 for the day after taxes. Tell the boss THANK YOU see ya in the morning. But when I come into town have to pay the same guy $14-15 per hour with no taxes and he is on my workers comp if he gets hurt?

Quick bitch the other day i had 2 men on my clock. We started working at 8am. should have been done by 4-5:00 at the lateset, but didnt finish till 6:00 You no how this story goes. They could not load they couldnt pad. One guy was new but tried very hard. The other guy knew what he was doing but. If i didnt ask for a specific piece i would find him standing in the driveway with hands in pocket or worse down stairs hiding. Agent kept calling him all day about problems from another job, so he was on phone more than a driver.

Anyway end of the job i figure glad this day is over. 10 hours $14 per hour i owe them $140 so i give them $150 each and say here ya go. No deductions for lunch which i bought, smoke breaks, phone talk time, morning coffee etc. I thought that was fair. Especially since at the agent they would have made $90 minus taxes.

But they said Drivers we need another $40 each cause we get 1 hour travel each way plus gas. (they volunteered to drive to job cause it was closer to thier home than the agents location)

What do you think about that. Hint they did not get another $40 from me.
