Read or listen to this entire article

Terry Button is a fifth-generation farmer from upstate New York who also works as a long-distance trucker, hauling hay and produce up and down the East Coast.

When I'm away from home, this is my home. Does somebody come in your front door and decide, 'I want to plug into your computer and see where you've been today'?

- Terry Button, truck driver

He's proud of his truck and likes it just the way it is. Inside, the cab is homey and low-tech, with a bed behind the two seats and a CB radio. There's no cruise control and no GPS telling him where to go.

"Canada is that way, Boston is that way, California is that way, Florida is that way," Button jokes. "I can figure out how to get there. I don't need a little box on the dash, telling me, 'Turn left, turn right.' "

But if a new rule proposed by the Department of Transportation goes through, Button will be required to have a high-tech little box on his dashboard — one that's hooked up to his engine — to automatically record how many hours he drives.

"I can't think of anything good that would come from this. If I could, I would tell you honestly, and I can't," says Button. He cares a lot about safety but thinks the proposed new rule would be a mistake.

Tracking Truckers

Paper log books, like this one used by trucker Terry Button, can be purchased at truck stops for as little as $1.49. Electronic monitors can cost more than $1,500.

Maggie Starbard/NPR Paper log books, like this one used by trucker Terry Button, can be purchased at truck stops for as little as $1.49. Electronic monitors can cost more than $1,500.

The device would be a new way to track how well truckers stick to the federal limits on driving hours that exist to keep dangerously tired truckers off the road. Such driving restrictions have been around since the 1930s, and truck drivers document all of their working hours in daily log books. Currently, they are supposed to work for no more than a 14-hour stretch, and only 11 of those hours can be driving hours.

But safety advocates have long argued that these handwritten logs are so easy to fake that they're a joke, noting that they're sometimes referred to in CB slang as "comic books," and that drivers can just lie on the logs and work far more hours.

"Tired truckers are a major, major safety problem," says Jackie Gillan of the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety in Washington, D.C. Her group has been urging the government to require electronic onboard recorders for more than 15 years. "Paper log books are easily manipulated. They are easily falsified."...

The bad news in that it has been replaced by a port-imposed Terminal Handling Charge (THC), in addition to the standard ship line THC. Most ship lines have reacted by changing their THC.

The end result is that commercial shipments of a very high value will likely pay less, but smaller value shipments (including Personal Effects) will end up paying more.

It is now more important than ever to make sure any shipping quote to or from Israel outlines the THC and Port Fees. The fees charged to the shipper are NOT regulated by the government, and vary from ship line to ship line, and agent to agent.

If you get a shipping quote that does not say, IN WRITING, that these fees are included, they ARE NOT, but they will still be due.

owner operator contracts

can somebody please tell me if getting paid less then 100%
for i think it is called item 120 (orgin service dest service
fee for the driver) is the norm now of days it use to be
100% but at this place i'm lease with the contract states
74% and according to the 400n this charges is supposed to
compassionate the driver for long carry s etc you know the
stuff that i don't get paid for anymore . . i had a unload a
couple of weeks a go in Atlanta ga 4000 pounds that took
8 hours just me and my helper it had a long carry thru a
parking garage a elevator on the 8th floor and another long
walk to a storage unit in total we probably walked about a
city block no lie and i could not get a extra dime for all that
extra work .i don't like the 400 n at all what is the problem
of just charging for the actually service that is being
preformed.
1) more than one trip with a Uhaul---might not be cost/time effective.

2) move with professional company---we pack, they pack van.

3) using Smartmove (Atlas) or similar--we pack the whole thing, they move the vaults.

We are quite good at packing both within the house and into moving vans and have the time to take to do that ourselves if needed Can anyone give some advice on pros/cons of the above choices.

We have general quotes of $5500 for 5 vaults with Smartmove (drop off, pick up and deliver), $10,000 for traditional mover (we pack in house, they pack van and move/unload).

This is about a 1600 mile move, and a 5 bedroom/4000sf home. We aren't sure if the estimates above are realistic or not and have not yet had a walk through estimate.

national moving contractors association

does anybody know who is running this campaign or has
anybody heard of them. here is there web site .
www.movingcontractors.org
